If you’re a dance mom, then you know that preparing for a dance competition will be key to helping you have a successful day. If you’re new to the dance competition scene, I’ll share a few tips that I’ve learned over the years that may help you along the way.
Pack your travel bags for the dance competition the night before; two days if possible.
Check and double check that you have packed every costume. Be sure you have every accessory for every costume. Try to keep the accessories with the costumes or try an accessory bag, especially if there are small pieces.
- Don’t forget the makeup bag! Be sure to include some makeup removal wipes.
- Be sure to have extra bobby pins and hair pins, hair spray, hair gel, comb, brush, anything you need for the required hairstyle.
- Have safety pins as well as needle and thread kit just in case of wardrobe malfunctions. Trust me, it has happened!
- Take an extra pair, or two, of tights. They seem to get holes in them at the absolute worst time! No need to panic if you have the extra pair on hand.
- Pack snacks. Think protein and carbs! You’ll want your dancer to be sustained throughout the day. Depending on how many dances they’re in, there may be little time for a sit-down meal. Also, depending on the location, fast food restaurants may be far and few between.
- Pack a blanket or a light jacket. Some venues keep it chilly.
- Be sure to have cash or card to purchase keepsakes such as clothing, pictures and video (they don’t allow photography or video), or snacks just in case you forgot #7 🙂
- Pack your patience. It will be a long, and sometimes stressful and emotional day. Wake up prepared and knowing that you have a long day ahead of you. It’s the nature of the beast! Just remember WHY you’re doing this! Keep your WHY in mind throughout the day and let everything else roll off your chest. It’s not that deep!
Most of all, HAVE FUN watching your dancer on stage!
